Toronto on a Budget: Free Things That Are Actually Great
Toronto might be expensive, but some of the city's best experiences cost nothing. From 400-acre parks to free museum nights, underground walking tours to legendary parades, here's how to experience Toronto without opening your wallet.
Parks & Outdoor Spaces
High Park
Location: Bloor Street West at Keele
Spanning 400 acres in the city's west end, High Park is Toronto's crown jewel. Beyond the famous cherry blossom trees (peak bloom: late April to early May), you'll find hiking trails, a free zoo, ponds, and enough green space to forget you're in Canada's largest city.
Don't miss:
Toronto Islands
Location: Ferry from Jack Layton Ferry Terminal
A 15-minute ferry ride takes you to a car-free archipelago with stunning skyline views, beaches, and peaceful walking paths. While the ferry costs around $9, once you're there, everything is free — beaches, trails, and the Centre Island petting zoo.
Best time to visit: Weekday mornings in summer
Scarborough Bluffs
Location: Scarborough (accessible by TTC)
Fourteen kilometers of dramatic cliffs rising from Lake Ontario. The hiking trails are free, the views are spectacular, and you'll feel like you've escaped the city entirely.
Pro tip: Bluffers Park Beach is one of the city's best swimming spots
Toronto Botanical Garden
Location: Lawrence Avenue East at Leslie
Seventeen themed gardens in Toronto's north end, completely free to visit. Perfect for a peaceful walk or a romantic afternoon.
Historic Neighbourhoods
The Distillery District
Location: Mill Street (east of downtown)
This pedestrian-only neighbourhood features beautifully restored Victorian industrial buildings, art galleries, and cobblestone streets. Free to explore, with some of the city's best people-watching.
Best for: Architecture lovers, photographers, coffee breaks at Balzac's
St. Lawrence Market
Location: Front Street East at Jarvis
One of the world's best food markets — free to walk through, though you'll probably want to buy something. Over 200 vendors sell everything from fresh pasta to artisanal bread.
Go on: Saturdays for the full experience (Farmer's Market is closed Sundays/Mondays)
Kensington Market
Location: Augusta Avenue at Dundas
Toronto's most eclectic neighbourhood is free to wander. Vintage shops, multicultural food stalls, murals, and a distinctly bohemian vibe.
Best on: Pedestrian Sundays (summer months — no cars allowed)
Landmark Experiences
Toronto Sign at Nathan Phillips Square
Location: City Hall
The iconic 3D Toronto sign is one of the city's most photographed spots. Free to visit, and in winter, the surrounding rink offers free skating (bring your own skates or rent for a fee).
The PATH
Location: Downtown underground
Over 30 kilometres of underground walkways connect major downtown buildings, shopping, and transit stations. Free to explore, and perfect for cold or rainy days.
Graffiti Alley (Rush Lane)
Location: Richmond Street West (between Spadina and Portland)
Toronto's open-air street art gallery runs for several blocks. Free, colourful, and constantly changing as artists add new works.
